Range Rules for Our Ranges
Part 1
Rules For All Ranges
- Safety first. Safe handling of firearms must be practiced at all times. Eye and hearing protection are required.
- No shotguns or slug guns. Shotguns or slug guns of any kind are not allowed on the range at any time.
- Guest passes are required. Every guest must have their own guest pass. Guest passes are available at the PPSA Range and cost $10 per person, per visit. Guests must be accompanied by a sponsoring member at all times and must follow all range rules.
- Rimfire-only areas. Rimfire-only means .17 or .22 caliber, non-centerfire, lower-velocity cartridges. Cartridges that damage reactive targets are prohibited in the rimfire-only range.
- Family membership and supervision. A family membership allows the member, their spouse, and children under 18 to use association facilities, including the shooting range. Children must remain under the control and supervision of a member while on the range. Children age 18 or older must have their own membership. Members must carry their membership card while at the range and show it upon request. Member codes may not be loaned to anyone. A membership card alone is not proof of current membership.
- Use the firing line. The immovable tables constitute the firing line. Shooting is allowed only from the firing line. A firearm is considered unloaded when there are no cartridges in the chamber and the magazine is removed. Firearms must remain unloaded and must not be fired while you are forward of, behind, or away from the firing line.
- Use approved targets only. You may shoot at paper targets on the provided backstops and at gongs or reactive targets provided by the association.
- Do not shoot prohibited objects. Do not shoot at rocks, trees, shrubs, bottles, cans, clay birds, or anything other than association-approved targets. Exploding targets are prohibited. No hunting. No camping.
- Certain ammunition and firearms are prohibited. Armor-piercing, steel-tipped, tracer, and flare-type ammunition are prohibited. .50 BMG is prohibited. Fully automatic weapons are prohibited.
- Follow cease-fire and downrange procedures. Before anyone goes forward of the firing line to attach, change, or remove targets, notify all other shooters and obtain agreement to a cease fire. All firearms must be unloaded with actions open. No one may handle a firearm while any person is forward of the firing line. Everyone remaining at the firing line must stay behind the red line. Red safety lights must be activated before anyone goes downrange. Do not walk behind target frames or the dirt backstop. After every person has returned to the firing line, turn off the red safety lights. Shooting may then resume.
- Rapid-fire trigger devices are prohibited. Forced reset triggers, binary triggers, and bump stock attachments are prohibited on all PPSA ranges.
- Handgun Range restrictions. Only traditional handguns may be used on the Handgun Range. All other “pistol”-designated weapons may be used only on the Sight-In Range.
- Attach paper targets properly. Attach paper targets to the fiber board and place them well clear of support frames and support posts so bullets do not strike or damage them. Do not shoot directly at supports.
- Bullets must enter the dirt backstop. Every bullet fired must impact and become buried in the dirt backstop behind the target support frames and posts.
- Shooting hours and gate procedures. Shooting hours are daylight to dark. The gate is not automatic. Members must physically close and lock the gate when entering and leaving the range.
- Carry in, carry out. Remove your targets, pick up your brass and nearby trash, and dispose of trash at home. No littering. No dumping.
- No alcohol or illegal drugs. Alcohol and illegal drugs are not allowed on range property. Anyone who is drunk or high will be reported to law enforcement.
- Parking, fire safety, and outside activities. Park only in designated parking areas. No open fires. Use caution with cigarettes. Activities conducted by outside groups, clubs, or similar organizations are prohibited.
- Exceptions require Board approval. Any exception to these rules must be authorized by the PPSA Board of Directors.
- Replacement fee. The replacement fee for a lost membership card and gate code is $10.
- Rule violations may affect membership. Violations of these rules may result in suspension and/or termination of membership.
Part 2
Additional Rules for the 200/300/400/500 Yard Range
- Confirm the range is clear. Check and recheck the entire downrange area to make certain no one is downrange and that it is safe to shoot.
- Complete initial sight-in at shorter distances. Perform bore sighting and initial sight-in activities on the 25/50-yard range and then the 100-yard range before shooting on the 200/300/400/500-yard range.
- Use the PPSA Cadi efficiently. Use the PPSA Cadi to expedite trips to and from the target frames and gongs. Do not linger downrange.
