Prickly Pear Sportsmen’s Association (PPSA) is a members-only shooting range on McDonald Pass, maintained by members and volunteers. Here’s how to become a member and get range access.

Membership Details

  • Cost: $50 per year
  • Membership year: January 1 to December 31
  • Includes: your spouse and immediate family under 18

How to Join

1) Pick up a membership application in Helena

Membership applications are available at:

  • Capital Sports
  • Murdoch’s
  • Sportsman’s Warehouse

2) Read the Range Rules and sign your membership card

You’re required to read and sign the Membership Card and you’re responsible for applying range rules for yourself and your immediate family. Keep your membership card with you while at the range—you may be asked to show your card and a form of ID.

3) Use your member access at the gate

The range is located on Highway 12 West on McDonald Pass. Just past mile marker 31, you’ll see a locked gate on the east side of the highway. Use your member access at the gate and follow the paved road to the range.

The member access number is a unique number assigned to your passcard that you will receive from one of the stores. You use the number on that card to sign in digitally to the range. It is unique only to you, so we can monitor entry/exits.

Guest Passes

Guests are welcome only when accompanied by a current code-holding PPSA member.

  • Guest pass: $10 per visit
  • Payment: cash or check
  • Who needs one: anyone over age 18 who accompanies you to the range must have a guest pass
  • 2 guests maximum per visit ($10 per guest).

Before You Head Out

  • Review the Range Rules before your first visit.
  • Bring your membership card every time you go.
  • Need to confirm weather conditions before you go? Use this McDonald Pass webcam link (also in the footer of our website). The state’s webcam is very close to where our range is situated. The road conditions near McDonald are what you should expect to face once you get to the range.
